About

Azhimala Shiva temple is situated in Thiruvananthapuram District in Vizhinjam poovar route. It is 20KMs away from Thampanoor and 7kms away from Kovalam. It took 1.5hours for us to reach the place from Kollam. It was a good ride through NH66. Google map will take us to the exact location of temple. Pay and park as well as free parking is available. We have chosen Pay and Park. We had our breakfast packed from home, we had it in the parking area and after that we started towards the temple.

We had to walk almost half kilometeres from the parking area to reach the temple. There were different shops on both the sides of the road. It was difficult to walk through the road as there were lot of pedestrians as well as vehicles. Most of the people had face mask but few didn’t. The huge Shiva statue is visible from the entrance itself. Lot of devotees were there to see the huge Shiva. I couldn’t believe such a huge crowd in the temple in the early morning.

I visited the place as a tourist. Devotees as well as tourists visit the place to see the beautiful sculpture. Everyone were busy to capture the sculpture in their mobile phones as well as selfies, groupies.

More about the Statue

The huge sculpture is 58 feet tall and it’s said to be the tallest Shiva Statue in Kerala. The sculpture is in Gangadhareshwara form. Shiva have the Goddess Ganga on his Jada (hair). Shiva’s face is turned to one side and eye points to sky, which is a rare version. The sculpture have 4 hands, one is resting on the thigh, another have a thrishul, another holds a damru and the forth one on the Jada (hair). The sculpture resembles a realistic version of Lord Shiva.

There is a meditation hall in the form of cave which can accommodate 100 persons at a time. Its construction is in progress and it may takes almost 3-6 months more to complete. The Shiva sculpture is completely built in concrete to prevent any damages caused due to salty beach winds. The sculpture was made by an youngster named P.S Devadathan. He had done the detailing of Shiva brilliantly. His great talent will be appreciable by the whole world for sure.

Azhimala was a normal temple. The Shiva statue turned the temple to a heavily crowded temple now. People from different parts of Kerala, as well as TamilNadu visit the place now. Lot of small scale business have started recently due to this. Beach is also heavily crowded. So, that was our trip we had after a long time.
